The latest on Chuck #5 from Wildstorm and DC Comics:
The hit NBC TV series continues taking the comics world by storm! Chuck Bartowski and his friends still can’t believe the importance of the man they rescued, but Chuck soon wonders if things may be too good to be true. Chuck’s curiosity may be the end of him!
I know what you really wanna see is the new cover, so here it is after the jump. (more…)
I’m not going to hide this “spoiler,” because I think that anyone who was watching Chuck last season realizes that eventually, the government is going to finish the new Intersect, and Chuck will become expendable. It’s inevitable that, at some point, Casey will be ordered to finish the job he was sent to do. General Beckman began preparing Casey — and us — for just that inevitability in Chuck vs. the Crown Vic, and Josh Schwartz confirms that it’s gonna happen in season two.
I love this show. It’s unhealthy how much I love this show, okay? But let me just say now that if they take the predictable route and make Casey the bad guy so Sarah can be the hero? I’ll stop watching. Cold turkey. And I know a lot of other fans will, too, not least of which are the legions of Adam Baldwin fanzombies who follow him blindly from fandom to fandom and seem genuinely unable to distinguish between John Casey and Jayne Cobb (despite those convenient pesky facial hair and speech pattern differences.) They are many, and they will be noticed. And for once, I’m glad of that.
I watch Chuck for a lot of reasons. The great ensemble cast, the amazing chemistry, and the snappy dialogue are only the first few that spring to mind. Every spoiler that leaks, regardless of the excitement and optimism with which it is delivered, leaves me a little less confident that season two will live up to season one’s legacy. I want to believe they’re trying to lower our expectations with lame spoilers and stunt casting so they can blow us away with the best season of television NBC has ever seen, but… I just don’t trust television writers that much anymore. Maybe I’ve just had my heart broken one too many times by the Stargate writers, who have consistently fallen short of their potential for greatness, relying instead on special effects, well-loved sci-fi clichés and their amazing cast to carry them through to the next season. Maybe I’ve had it ripped out one too many times by Joss Whedon’s penchant for hitting us where it hurts just because he’s good at it. In any case, the only thing I do trust is that sooner or later, my favorite shows will let me down.
I really hope that Josh Schwartz and the rest of the writers on the Chuck staff prove me wrong.
Well, the nominations for the 60th Annual Primetime Emmys went public this morning, and while I’m sure we can all agree that Zachary Levi and Adam Baldwin were grievously overlooked in the categories of Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, respectively, rest assured that Chuck was not entirely overlooked by the Academy. The show garnered nominations in the categories for Outstanding Main Title Design (props to title designers Karin Fong, Jonathan Gershon and Dana Yee) and Outstanding Stunt Coordination (stunt coordinator Merritt Yohnka for Chuck vs. the Undercover Lover — Casey using Chuck as a weapon!) Great work, guys! You deserve it!
I have been foiled in my attempts to procure the new comic! First, Independence Day weekend somehow delayed deliveries so none of the comic book shops within at least fifty miles of me got their new shipments yesterday. (Am I the only person who fails to see the sense in a holiday on a Friday affecting deliveries on the following Wednesday?) Then, for some reason my usual shop had their shipment further delayed (yesterday they told me they’d have it in today, today they told me tomorrow.)
All the other shops in the area, when asked if they had the new Chuck #2 from DC Comics, said, “What is it called? I don’t know that one. No, we don’t have it. I’ve never heard of it.” Thanks, guys. Way to keep up on the new releases.
Today marks the release of the second issue of Chuck from Wildstorm and DC Comics. Here’s what I’m wondering: Are you reading the comics? If so, what do you think of them?
Personally, I have plans to be at my local comic shop shortly after 3, when the new releases arrive. I loved Chuck #1 beyond all reason; it really captured the essence of an episode, and I can’t wait to get my copy of Chuck #2 this afternoon!
My one hope is that Sarah isn’t as marginalized in #2; at first, I loved that it was, basically, Chuck and Casey Are Awesome and Do Stuff (just like the show!) but I find I’m kind of disappointed in Sarah just being there to a) look pretty and b) beat people up. I guess that’s probably my one qualm with the show, too. Ah, well. You can’t always get what you want– wait, that’s a different show all together. Everybody lies? Nope, still wrong. (I am probably the only person alive who would read a House, MD comic and absolutely laugh my ass off.)
Tonight, I’ll try to find some time to sit down and review both issues, since I neglected to do so (apart from barely-coherent fangirl squeeing in my Livejournal) when the first one came out.
I was poking around del.icio.us today when I stumbled across this gem. Like my last rec, this is not-slash. You can read it however you like, but essentially it showcases the prickly, delicate relationship between Casey and Chuck perfectly. Casey doesn’t know why he gives a rat’s ass, but he can’t help it. This story explores what happens when Casey receives the order — the one we all know he’s bound to get sooner or later — and finds that, for once, he can’t do the job.
I just loved this too much not to share it. It sounds like the start of a bad joke. This guy with a head full of highly-classified secrets is sitting in a secure government bunker playing video games with Hellboy…
I was forced to see the first Hellboy by an ex — a horrible way to see anything, and almost a guarantee that it won’t be enjoyed — but after seeing all the promos for the sequel, I think I might have to give the original another shot.
It seems like every time you turn around, they’re announcing another casting spoiler! I’d be remiss in my duties as a spoiler-ho if I didn’t make the spoilers available to everyone else as I become aware of them, so here you go. (more…)
Clearly Google is trying to tell me something: I have been negligent in blogging about recent casting spoilers. I’ve received no less than twenty Google Alerts containing between two and ten links each about the most recent, controversial one, and I got the message! So here it comes: three casting spoilers released over the last few weeks, and my general reaction to them. (more…)
